write science fiction is a six-week online course from Curtis Brown Creative – the renowned writing school run by the leading literary agency. Since its launch in 2011, more than 170 students have become commercially published authors.
Join prolific science fiction writer Adam Roberts on a six-week journey into the genre. Adam shares wisdom gained from writing his 23 most recently published novels mount of purgatory (Gollancz 2021; shortlisted for the Prometheus Prize) and The this (Gollancz 2022). You will work through six modules featuring instructional videos and substantial notes from Adam. You’ll learn how to develop your novum (“newness”), build a compelling world, populate it with extraordinary characters, and write a story that transports your readers to a place that’s all yours. Topics include world-building, narrative structure, and navigating the genre’s beloved tropes while avoiding clichés.
You will be invited to upload your completed writing assignments, give and receive feedback, and discuss weekly topics with your fellow students on Curtis Brown Creative’s private online learning platform. Students also receive written feedback on one of their assignments from an experienced Curtis Brown Creative editor.
