UNF Creative Writing Hosts Wainright Award Celebration and Talon Open Mic Review – UNF Spinnaker

The University of North Florida (UNF) Creative Writing Program is hosting its annual Wainright Scholarship Celebration and Open Mic Talon Review on Tuesday night.

Assistant Professor and Creative Writing Coordinator Mark Ari provided Spinnaker with this statement on the dual event:

The Wainright Award Celebration and Reading celebrates the creative work of UNF students and our vibrant creative writing program. Awards are in Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction, Poetry and Screenplay. The Talon Review Open Mic, hosted by the Talon Review (UNF’s student-run literary journal), offers students the opportunity to share their fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and song with an audience. warm and welcoming.

The Wainright Scholarship is awarded in memory of Amy R. Wainright, a former teacher in the English Department. This year’s winners include Rumooz Al Ghanim for Creative Non-Fiction, Megha Mohan for Fiction, Nicole Knorr for Poetry and Samy El-Kamel for Screenwriting. The finalists are Toree Dobson, Alexis Wilson, Elizabeth Divine and Jody Ward.

For the Talon Review Open Mic, registration will begin at 6 p.m. and readings are limited to a maximum of five minutes. Students can read their own creative non-fiction, fiction, poetry, screenplay, or song.

“These events together provide our greatest opportunity on campus for student voices to be heard and shared, and for young literary artists to meet and interact with their community,” Ari wrote.

The event will take place at the UNF Gallery of Art, Building 2, Suite 1001. The Wainright Scholarship Celebration will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. while the Talon Review Open Mic will take place right after beginning at 7:30 p.m. at 9:30 p.m.
