JP Taravella’s Creative Writing Class Sends Finalists to ‘District Literary Fair’ • Coral Springs Talk

Hundreds of young writers wrote entries for the Broward County Public School’s annual literary fair, but only the best plays made it to the final round, with six of them penned by students from JP Taravella.

Julian Anton, Cedar Bachmann, Jalen Campbell, David Etienne, Tu Nguyen and Dylan Pineiro are the six finalists.

With the exception of Pineiro, whose English teacher, Christa Martel, submitted her piece, the other finalists represent a co-ed creative writing class taught by Marianne Costi.

“My students submitted outstanding writing to this year’s district-wide Literary Fair and deserved to be recognized for their exceptional talent and dedication to craftsmanship,” Costi said.

She added that the winners would be notified by email on April 2 and a live virtual ceremony would follow at the end of that month.

Broward County Public School District Literary fair has been an annual event for nearly 25 years and features outstanding student compositions and language arts projects.

With up to 10 niches in each, the three main categories are Prose, Interpretation, Poetry and a Poet Lauriate category.

Of the six JP Taravella finalists, the winning works were in the form of a short story presented as a fable, both free verse and rhyming poetry, a sonnet and a myth.

Creative writing professor Marianne Costi said she was delighted to serve as a judge for the 2022 competition and that picking a clear and decisive winner from its many sub-categories does not promise to be an easy task.

“I am proud of all my students. It’s been a tough year for everyone, and I’m glad they found some solace and pleasure in writing.
