The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports, will host five intensive creative writing workshops ahead of the annual Jamaican Creative Writing Competition and Exhibition. the JCDC. The series of workshops, entitled “The Art of Publishing”, will run from Tuesday 29 November to Saturday 3 December and will cover the fields of essay, novel, play, poetry and the new.
The first in the series, the Essay and Writing Workshop, will take place on Tuesday 29 November at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, 36 Hope Road, Kingston 10. The Poetry Piece Writing Workshops will take place on Wednesday 30 November , and Thursday, December 1, respectively at the JCDC Head Office, 3-5 Phoenix Avenue, Kingston 10. The Novel and Short Story Writing Workshops will be held on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3, respectively, at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Center .
Registration will be for the workshops, starting at 8:30 am, at a cost of $2,000 per participant per workshop. This includes lunch, hot and cold drinks and a certificate. Those interested can also contact the parish office of the JCDC or the head office to register before November 28.
The Jamaica Creative Writing Competition has been one of the best channels for providing Jamaican writers with the opportunity to validate their talent, while showcasing and promoting writers and their original work.
The competition is divided into three levels – junior, intermediate and adult – and prizes are awarded to the best writers at each level in the five areas. Participants are encouraged to write about the Jamaican experience.
Entries for the contest are now open and will remain open until April 30, 2017. Individuals can access entry forms, rules and contest guidelines on the JCDC website, www.jcdc.gov.jmits headquarters at 3-5 Phoenix Avenue in Kingston or parish offices across the island.
