David Gaffney Creative Writing Workshop

Saturday, October 8, 2022

Can you tell a story in less than 500 words? David Gaffney thinks you can, and in this workshop you’ll learn how to boil ideas down to an ultra-short format – how to condense while keeping your story effective, powerful and easy to understand, how to manage character, description, point of view and dialogue, and how to reduce a thousand words to 150 without losing anything. Packed with practical and fun exercises, this session will leave you wondering why something has to be longer than one side of A4. In this workshop you will explore the culture of the North and reflect in particular on how sport defines the worldview of the North of England in the context of football and rugby league and the culture of towns on the M62 corridor. David Gaffney lives in Manchester. He is the author of several books including Sawn-Off Tales (2006), Aromabingo (2007), Never Never (2008), The Half-Life of Songs (2010), More Sawn-Off Tales (2013), All The Places I’ve Never Lived (2017) and the graphic novel The Three Rooms In Valerie’s Head (2018). His latest novel Out Of The Dark is available now on Confingo and his graphic novel, Rivers, is also available on Top Shelf ‘A Hundred and Fifty Gaffney Words Are Worth More Than Many Others’ Novels.’ The Guardian.
