Bedford Girls’ School student receives National Creative Writing Award

Jemima is a Grade 3 student at Bedford Girls’ School

A poem called Dear Earth written by a Grade 3 student from Bedford Girls’ School has won first prize in a national creative writing competition.

Elementary school students from across the country participated in the 2022 Girls School Association (GSA) creative writing competition, which focused on sustainability and environmental protection.

Jemima won first place with her poem Dear Earth in the KS2 category. Additionally, Elaina in 6th grade and Lia in 4th grade received a Highly Commended.

The national competition invited students to create a piece of prose or poetry called Dear Earth. They were asked to express their hopes and visions for the future of the Earth.

Entries were judged on their creativity, imagination and originality, and impressed all judges with their passion for the environment.

Jemima recorded the reading of her winning piece, which was broadcast to GSA headteachers and colleagues at the GSA Summer Briefing last week. It is now featured on their website to view here.

Jemima’s teacher, Ms. Thomas, said, “I’m so thrilled that Jemima’s poem was selected as the winning entry. She worked so incredibly hard on her poem and I’m very proud of her achievement.

Ms Kristie Whomsley, Primary School Eco-Coordinator, added: “We are extremely proud of all the entries, which have shown that our pupils are aware of the current environmental issues they face and the importance of looking for ways to protect our land and its inhabitants.”
